Deadline is reporting that Oscar winner Kevin Costner has landed the lead role in Paramount Network’s upcoming drama Yellowstone. He’ll be playing John Dutton, a rancher who owns the largest contiguous ranch in the United States and constantly finds himself having to defend his property from outside threats.
From Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water), Yellowstone chronicles Dutton’s efforts to keep his ranch from being overridden by land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park. The series is the first original drama ordered specifically for Paramount Network, the rebranded moniker and identity of the network currently known as Spike TV. Paramount has already ordered Heathers and American Woman, originally developed by TV Land, to series, while Spike dramas The Mist and The Shannara Chronicles will be eligible for additional seasons on Paramount.
Mostly known for his film roles, including Dances with Wolves, The Untouchables, and The Bodyguard, Costner’s lone television credits are History miniseries Hatfields & McCoys and an episode of Amazing Stories in 1985.
Yellowstone is set to premiere summer 2018 on Paramount Network.
