Before they were “John and Mary, husband and wife…” they were played by different actors. Or at least, they will be, if The CW’s Supernatural prequel The Winchesters hits the air.
Trade reports (including THR) are reporting that John and Mary Winchester will be played by Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly. Jensen Ackles, who played “Dean” on Supernatural, is narrating the pilot and is one of the Executive Producers. The show is described as following “the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”
Here are character descriptions for the two leads:
Mary Campbell is a 19-year-old who’s been fighting the forces of darkness for most of her life. After losing someone close to her, she considers quitting the family business — until her father’s disappearance and the arrival of newcomer John Winchester forces her to lead a new team.
John Winchester has recently returned from Vietnam. Selfless and clear-headed, he finds a new mission back home, where traces of his father’s past lead him to a secret organization and a whole new war as a hunter.
Samantha Smith and Jeffrey Dean Morgan played grown up versions of the characters on Supernatural; Amy Gumenick and Matt Cohen played them at a younger time.
The Winchesters is hoping for a spot on The CW’s 2022-2023 schedule. As for these new actors – you might remember Meg Donnelly from American Housewife or Zombies; she’s also in the upcoming third season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Drake Rodger was previously seen in the feature The In Between.
