In this installment of his “What’s On?” column, Jeff Holbrook outlines his TV picks for the week starting today.
1. The Vampire Diaries 3.13 “Dangerous Liaisons” (The CW)
Air Time: Thursday, February 9th, 2012 @ 8PM ET

Synopsis: Elena is surprised to receive an invitation to a formal ball, and when Damon and Stefan hear the party is being hosted at Klaus’ newly renovated mansion, they both insist on attending the event with her. Caroline and Matt also receive invitations to the ball from unexpected admirers. At the elegant party, Elena learns of a horrifying plan that could lead to numerous deaths and she must decide who she can trust with her new information. Caroline discovers a side of Klaus no one would have suspected. Finally, after an evening of violence and dashed hopes, Damon finds a new way to cope.
Thoughts: Following the suspenseful episode that last week was, despite a rather unexciting conclusion, I’m looking forward to how the original family will react to their mother’s return. Klaus’ siblings have more than a bone to pick with their hybrid brother, yet what will they do since dear old mommy forgave her horror of a son? We will find out this week at Klaus’ grand party! Shocking that there is an elegant, massive party in Mystic Falls, huh?
2. Supernatural 7.14 “Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magical Menagerie” (CW)
Air Time: Friday, February 10th, 2012 @ 9PM ET
Supernatural at KSiteTV – Supernatural Forum
Synopsis: Sam is forced to confront a childhood fear when a case takes him and Dean to Kansas to investigate Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magical Menagerie, a local pizza chain that hosts children’s birthday parties. Sam and Dean discover that the victims’ children had recently been to the restaurant and drawn a picture of their worst fear, which then came to life to kill their parent. While Dean confronts the man behind the magic, Sam is left to deal with some very angry clowns.
Thoughts: After reading the title of this episode months ago, this episode became one of my most anticipated episodes of this wonderful show ever. Then after reading the last line of the synopsis, it became THE most anticipated. I cannot wait to see Sam face his balloon-molding, laugh-inducing biggest fear. I wish that Tim Curry could reprise Pennywise the Clown in this episode…
3. Spartacus: Vengeance 2.03 “The Greater Good” (STARZ)
Air Time: Friday, February 10th, 2012 @ 10PM ET
Synopsis: Spartacus and his men liberate a Roman villa, but its slaves are wary. Oenomaus throws himself into the brutal Pits, and Glaber supports Lucretia’s prophecies, despite Ilithyia’s protests.
Thoughts: After an epic premiere that has made the stakes of this season extremely high, the second episode looks to throw us into more action. I love Peter Mensah as Oenomaus and cannot wait to see his backstory and more vicious brawls with him. Lucy Lawless also looks to entertain this week now that we see she may be remembering what has happened to her.
Synopsis: After learning of Naevia’s fate, Spartacus must deal with a rift among the gladiators; Lucretia divulges a long-kept secret in order to strengthen her position; and the rebels find themselves at risk after an attack.
Thoughts: The things that I love about this show is the action, characters, writing, direction, deception and did I mention the characters? After two episodes into this follow-up to Blood and Sand, the intensity couldn’t be higher! Tune in to see how Spartacus will fare after the events of last week.
4. Once Upon a Time 1.13 “Skin Deep” (ABC)
Air Time: Sunday, February 12th, 2012 @ 8PM ET

Synopsis: After Mr. Gold’s house is robbed, Emma keeps a close eye on him when it looks like he wants to track down the criminal and dole out some vigilante justice as payback, and Valentine’s Day finds Mary Margaret, Ruby and Ashley (Jessy Schram, Falling Skies) having a girls’ night out. Meanwhile, in the fairytale land that was, Belle (Emilie de Ravin, Lost) agrees to a fateful deal to give up her freedom in order to save her town from the horrors of the Ogre war.
Thoughts: It’s about time we get Belle and the Beast on this show! I’ve been anxiously waiting to see what the writers plan on doing with this fairytale classic. It is even more exciting to see these characters now considering that both ABC and the CW have ordered pilots for next year based off of Beauty and the Beast. Also, I’m curious to see how that slimy “Mr. Gold” can manipulate Belle.
5. The Walking Dead 2.08 “Nebraska” (AMC)
Air Time: Sunday, February 12th, 2012 @ 10PM ET
The Walking Dead at KSiteTV – Walking Dead Forum
Synopsis: Rick and the others try to restore order in the aftermath of a terrible discovery. Hershel takes up an old habit and disappears, Rick and Glenn must follow him into town.
Thoughts: After the epic midseason finale barn massacre, the group has to be hurting. The human emotion is so powerfully displayed in this show. Who would have thought the human interaction and emotion of a show about a zombie apocalypse would be one of its strongest aspects. I love this show and cannot wait to see where these characters go from that last episode.
