YouTube Premium has announced a straight-to-series order for Weird City, a comedic sci-fi anthology co-created, written, and executive produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele.
“We are thrilled to be in business with Jordan, Charlie and Jose, who have brilliantly created a highly entertaining satire that will be a timely send up of modern society,” said YouTube content chief Susanne Daniels. “We are excited to partner with Sonar Entertainment and all of the innovative storytellers behind Weird City to push boundaries and redefine what a comedy series can be.”
Co-created with Charlie Sanders (Key & Peele), Weird City is set in the metropolis of Weird, with each episode set to explore issues that pertain to present-day life in the city. The project is the second anthology on Peele’s plate, as his take on the seminal genre anthology The Twilight Zone will premiere on CBS All Access.
The episodic anthology is undergoing something of a renaissance in recent years, with Weird City joining acclaimed Netflix piece Black Mirror, HBO’s Room 104, and TBS’s The Guest Book in resurrecting the televisual form that had fallen out of fashion.
Weird City is the latest addition to a growing scripted slate for YouTube Premium, which is already home to dance drama Step Up: High Water, teen dramedy Youth & Consequences, and genre offering Impulse. The platform has space drama Origin and teen comedy Wayne on tap for later this year.
The six-episode first season of Weird City is set to premiere in 2019 on YouTube Premium.
