SPOILER WARNING: An element of the April 3 season premiere of Walker is being discussed within. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch before reading!
The Season 4 premiere of Walker titled “The Quiet” featured a birthday for Cordell Walker (Jared Padalecki) who, in a lighter aspect of the season premiere, had set out to enter a steak eating contest out of town to celebrate the date, and his loved ones were going to surprise him by showing up. Unfortunately, there was a change of plans… but that didn’t keep the meat away, as Walker’s family gifted him with a different surprise: a competition held right there at home.
When we spoke with Jared Padalecki earlier this week, we asked how much steak was actually eaten during filming. And the answer sounds like it was actually a lot.
“In fairness, the steak was so damn good, that Keegan [Allen] and I were both in there still eating when they said cut, and Jeff Pierre was as well,” Jared recalled. “We were like, ‘this is too good! We’ve got to keep going!’ I probably went through a couple pounds over the course of six or eight hours [of filming].”
Jared told us that he and Executive Producer Anna Fricke discussed the steak eating challenge at the Big Texan way back in early Season 1, and possibly even before they started filming. “I was like, ‘I think it’d be fun to shoot on location, I’ll try it, and we’ll just fill the cameras and give me an hour, and we can write it in, however it works.’ So, we’ve been trying to find a way to work something like that [for a while].”
Jared also pointed to the challenges seen on TV outlets like the Food Network and how Cordell would respond to such things. “I think Cordell would be the kind of guy who would totally want to do that,” he said. “It only took three seasons to get there.”
