TCA: Mark Pedowitz On Choosing Valor

The CW’s upcoming military drama Valor (premiering October 9) is a somewhat risky choice for The CW, a network that is certainly not known for military dramas. It is also coming at a time that two other big network shows – The Brave on NBC and Seal Team on CBS – have military themes.

At The CW Executive Session of the Television Critics Association press tour, Pedowitz talked a bit about his hopes for Valor to break out, and why a show like that made The CW Fall schedule.

“It’s The CW. We’ll have a different twist on it, and hopefully, the audience will find it,” Pedowitz said about how and why his show would stand out in the mix.

And how will it fit in on The CW? “In a lot of ways, it further broadens the brand. I found, when I was involved with ABC Studios doing Army Wives, there was a real need. People wanted to see these type of shows. And we’re a broadcaster, as much as we’re a multi-platform player and across the board and we’re seen anywhere. But it’s still important to have a broad mix of shows. And I always felt military shows worked. And in this very fractionalized country, more people support the military than not and will give a show like this a shot,” he said.

“It will be military, which is something I’ve wanted to do for the last six years,” Pedowitz continued. “This is our third attempt to do it. We believe we have the right mix for the show now. But at the end of the day, it’s going to be a great soap, on top of it having a military background. We think Christina and Matt are a great couple together, and I’m hoping, if it works out ‑‑ because I’ve had experience doing military shows at ABC Studios with Army Wives. It’s a cross between Army Wives and what’s going on the military life.”
