Lifetime has announced that divisive drama UnREAL and Canadian import Mary Kills People have been renewed for their fourth and second seasons, respectively.
From Sarah Gertrude Shapiro (Sequin Raze) and Marti Noxon (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce), UnREAL captures a behind the scenes look at reality-dating competition Everlasting and follows the cat-and-mouse relationship between young producer Rachel (Shiri Appleby) and showrunner Quinn (Constance Zimmer). The series follows an acclaimed first season, which resulted in two Emmy nominations, with a second season that sunk both its ratings and critical good will, so much so that the yet-to-air third season of the show has been pushed to early 2018.
Renewed for a six-episode second season by Canadian broadcaster Global two months ago, Mary Kills People follow Mary Harris (Caroline Dhavernas), an ER doctor by day who help terminally ill patients die on their own terms by night. Created by Tara Armstrong (Private Eyes) and showran by Tassie Cameron (Rookie Blue), Mary Kills People stars Jay Ryan (Beauty and the Beast), Richard Short (Covert Affairs), Lyriq Bent (Saw II), and Greg Bryk (Bitten).
In addition to their two on-going scripted series, Lifetime has psychological thriller You, executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow) and Sera Gamble (The Magicians), on tap for early next year. The series will likely be paired with UnREAL despite the fact that already low-rated UnREAL will be coming off a critically lambasted season and an almost two-year hiatus.
