After averaging 10 million multi-platform viewers and ranking as the network’s third most watched series in both the demo and total viewers, FOX has given a second season renewal to medical drama The Resident, the network confirmed today.
“Amy, Todd and all the producers on The Resident set out to create a medical show that viewers haven’t seen before – to peel back the curtain and reveal the truth of what happens, both good and bad, behind the scenes at hospitals across the country. Clearly, they’ve succeeded,” said Fox’s president of entertainment Michael Thorn. “Matt, Emily, Bruce, Manish, Shaunette and the show’s entire cast have turned in consistently heartfelt performances, and we are so excited to go back to Chastain Memorial for another tremendous season.”
The renewal of The Resident completes the set for FOX, which has now renewed every new drama it premiered this season. While only 9-1-1 could be classified as a breakout, the other FOX dramas have been solid additions to their schedule, with The Resident a pleasant surprise given an incompatible lead-in and somewhat underwhelming sampling following the NFC Championship game in January. The show’s steadiness shows an engaged audience, unspeakably valuable in today’s TV environment, and gives FOX a particularly interesting card in its deck for 2018-2019. Will they try to grow it by airing it in the fall, perhaps with 9-1-1? Or could they hang on to it for midseason, thinking that it’d be a jolt their schedule could need?
From Amy Holden Jones (Black Box), Hayley Schore (Code Black), and Roshan Sethi (Code Black), The Resident tells the story of a tough senior resident who guides an idealistic young doctor on his first day on the job and exposes what it’s really like to have so many lives in your hands on a daily basis.
The season finale of The Resident airs Monday, May 14th at 9:00 on FOX.
