Ever since getting together with Brett, Kenny has been working hard at trying to impress him. Insecure as to whether a guy like Brett could ever stay interested in a guy like him for the long term, and petrified at the thought of losing his first boyfriend before they ever have the chance to build anything, Kenny has teetered on the brink of being a bad boy and tried his hand at being the realest of Real Housewives before realizing that he doesn’t have to put up artifice to make someone stay. Brett is interested in Kenny because of who he is, not who he wants him to be, and as their relationship grows, it will only strengthen the more Kenny embraces this. But even as Kenny knows that there is genuine feelings there from Brett, there’s a part of him that can’t stop bending over backwards to put on a show.
On the next episode of The Real O’Neals, Jimmy decides that he wants to teach Kenny how to drink, so when Shannon scores a comped hotel room as a result of her latest scam, he takes this as the perfect opportunity to go wild with his little brother. The two have grown closer since Kenny came out and are arguably as tight as ever thanks to Jimmy’s heroics at the wrestling meet, so it makes sense that Jimmy would want to spend more time together, especially doing something where he’s got more experience/knowledge. Only Kenny opts to invite Brett along for the ride and inadvertently makes things awkward; not only is this the first time Jimmy and Brett will be hanging out together, it comes at a time when Kenny won’t be in control of his faculties. Granted, Kenny loosening up during Brett’s first interaction with Jimmy would be a good thing, given his propensity to overthink any stressful situation, but he’s not going to be able to loosen up while still retaining control of himself if this is his first time drinking. Instead of awing Brett with this sudden rebellious streak, Kenny is unwittingly setting himself up to look bad in front of someone whose opinion of him he cares about deeply, all the while getting Brett and Jimmy’s friendship off on the worst foot possible.
Elsewhere on The Real O’Neals, Eileen discovers that Pat’s new girlfriend (and first real relationship since the separation) is none other than her nemesis Sheila DeMars.
The Real O’Neals airs Tuesdays at 9:30 on ABC.
How will the negative experience drinking impact Kenny’s relationship with Brett? Could the strong bond that Kenny’s developed with Jimmy ever since coming out weaken as a result? Is there any chance in this world that Eileen won’t try to break Pat and Sheila up, even knowing how difficult it can be to date post-divorce?
