With the announced shows that have been renewed by The CW for the 2017-18 TV season, one veteran show was not mentioned: The Originals, which doesn’t even begin its fourth season until March 17, 2017. Could the show survive and live on without its Vampire Diaries sire?
At today’s Executive Session of the TCA Press Tour, CW President Mark Pedowitz addressed those very questions.
“Julie [Plec] and I spoke ahead of time about this,” Pedowitz answered. “The Originals has yet not premiered for this season; it will probably be a discussion in May. I am a big Julie Plec fan. I am hoping that The Originals can continue. A lot of will be dependent upon performance, but I’m counting on Julie to deliver for the season,” he said, hopefully.
Often times in TV history, spinoffs have outlasted their “parent” shows leading to some potential crossovers, with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Jeffersons, and Family Matters being three specific cases. In any event, we should hear more about a fifth season between now and May when The CW announces their schedule for the next TV season.
