The series premiere of the new CW series The Messengers airs on April 17, and The CW has released an official description for the episode, which is called “Awakening.”
Here’s that write-up:
THE WHEELS OF REVELATION HAVE BEGUN TO TURN — A mysterious object plummets to Earth, sending out a shock wave that causes five strangers to perish, only to miraculously come back to life moments later. The group includes Vera (Shantel VanSanten), a struggling radio-astronomer searching for her missing son; Erin (Sofia Black-D’Elia), a young mother desperate to protect her seven year old daughter (guest star Madison Dellamea) from an abusive ex-husband (guest star Lane Garrison); Peter (Joel Courtney), a troubled high school student; Raul (JD Pardo), a federal agent looking to escape his dangerous and violent undercover assignment; and Joshua (Jon Fletcher), a charismatic second-generation televangelist. Most mysterious of all is the figure known only as The Man (Diogo Morgado), who offers Vera the one thing she wants most in life – if she will help him with one morally complicated task which puts her on a collision course with Rose (Anna Diop), a nurse who has been in a coma for seven years. Drawn together by fate and biblical prophecy, the “Messengers” soon learn they have supernatural gifts that might be the only hope for preventing the impending Rapture. Craig Frank also stars. Stephen Williams directed the episode written by Eoghan O’Donnell (#101). Original airdate 4/17/2015.

“the only hope for preventing the impending Rapture.” What is wrong with those writers? Sounds like they write their series theme from a profound ignorance of the theology of the Apocalypse of John. From a Christian’s viewpoint, “the Rapture” is a desirable event! “The Rapture” is the time that our Christ resurrects those who died in the faith, and “air-evacs” them along with the living who are “in Christ.” To Christians, the event is looked for with anticipation. The rest of the world will probably rejoice for a time that us “troublesome” Christians are finally gone!
Besides that – the five newly winged “heroes” are wrapped up in questionable sub plots – like the young televangelist’s wife who is pregnant by her father-in-law. This series looks to be on a level with that recent “crap movie”: NOAH. What a waste. Out of a possible score of ten, I give this first episode a “one” simply for sucking me in to watch. I’ll not spend one second more to watch any more of this trash. APPLE really picked a LEMON of a show. I won’t be buying their stupid new “watch.”
“The only hope for preventing the impending rapture”? Why do they hope to prevent the Rapture? According to Scripture, both the righteous dead (then resurrected) and the living faithful will be snatched away to heaven to be with God. Perhaps, the people who oppose the rapture know that as long as the Christians are around, all hell on earth will NOT break out. Presently, it is obvious that the whole world is hating, persecuting & murdering Christians whenever possible. Those of the world would otherwise be happy to be rid of the Christians. The premise of “preventing the impending rapture” is theologically upside-down & likely born of ignorance.
Lastly, the moral situations presented to the newly minted “angels” are repugnant. One needlessly shoots his fellow agents to death. Another. the tele-evangelist has a wife who is pregnant by his nasty evangelist dad. Come now – incestuous adultery? Another, the angel boy beats the snot out of a bully & throws him into a car windshield? Admittedly, this world is not nice, nor are its inhabitants, but this show is muddied in its inception. I give it a half star for pulling us in to watch. I’ll be doing something else during the next show. Thank you.
