The Messengers comes to The CW on Friday, April 10, and today, the cast and creators were featured in a panel at the CW portion of the TCA Press Tour.
The pilot episode of The Messengers has already been sent to critics and features a lot of setup, so it is not surprising that one of the first questions asked involved how quickly we will learn more about what’s going on.
“There’s a lot to be said for mystery,” Executive Producer Trey Callaway said. “Eoghan [O’Donnell] and I have often said about this show, since he wrote the pilot so beautifully, if Close Encounters and The Stand got married in a church and had a baby, it would be The Messengers. Tonally, that’s what we’re after, and that includes all of the mystery that would be a part of that. Having said that, by the end of the pilot, we definitely want our viewers to have a pretty clear idea of what kind of ride they’re in for, and then, that understanding and awareness only develops exponentially with every subsequent episode,” he promised.
Callaway looked forward to the show’s second episode, where one character will become instrumental in getting the five extremely disparate characters in the cast together. “A lot more information comes out in Episode 2,” he said. “Not only for our characters, but also for our audience.”
“The strands really do start to come together and we start to get a sense of the Messengers as a group, not just as individuals,” O’Donnell added. “These are ordinary people who are changed in that moment, but they stay themselves and they still have their own personal problems and they’re still grappling with those issues throughout even as the world might be coming to an end around them.”
