Hulu announced today that acclaimed royal dramedy The Great has been renewed for a second season.
Season one of The Great was one of the top performing original comedies on Hulu in 2020 and bolsters an increasingly female-driven comedy slate that includes Emmy nominee PEN15, Dollface, Shrill, and High Fidelity. Its renewal follows recently renewals for Solar Opposites and Crossing Swords, as well as the cancellation of Harlots and Reprisal. The streamer currently has High Fidelity, Castle Rock, Ramy, and Love, Victor in renewal limbo.
From Oscar nominee Tony McNamara (The Favourite), The Great is a satirical look at the rise of future Russian ruler Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning), with season one chronicling a hopeful young girl’s arrival in Russia for an arranged marriage to Emperor Peter. Her optimism quickly dissipates when she realizes the lion’s den she’s been thrown into, a dangerous and backwards world that she’s determined to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside.
In addition to Fanning, the series stars Nicholas Hoult (Skins), Phoebe Fox (Curfew), Adam Godley (Breaking Bad), Gwilym Lee (Bohemian Rhapsody), Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall), Douglas Hodge (Joker), Sacha Dhawan (Last Tango in Halifax), Sebastian de Souza (Recovery Road), Bayo Gbadamosi (Doctor Who), and Belinda Bromilow (Spirited).
