Freeform continued filling out their 2018 schedule on Thursday by revealing that acclaimed drama The Fosters will resume its fifth season on Tuesday, January 9th at 8:00.
The first half of The Fosters season five was focused on issues relating to immigration and the transgender community, with Callie making friends with a college classmate whose family was undocumented and further exploring her relationship with Aaron. The summer finale concluded with Callie, Ximena, and AJ seeking sanctuary in a neighborhood church in order to keep Ximena from being taken by ICE, a cliffhanger sure to be resolved in the winter premiere.
Freeform heads into 2018 with a rebooted scheduling strategy, opting to expand their originals across four nights vs. their most recent strategy only targeting Mondays and Tuesdays. Going forward, Mondays on Freeform will be about unscripted originals; Tuesdays will be focused on dramas; Wednesdays will be for comedies; and Thursdays will be for genre content, with no originals airing at 9:00. The network will be using its vast movie library to platform shows while trying to launch less at one time.
The Fosters joins a winter 2018 lineup for Freeform that features Grown-ish and Alone Together on Wednesdays, as well as Beyond on Thursdays.
