Season 4 of The Fosters premieres this Monday, June 20 on Freeform, which makes now a perfect time to share another one of our interviews from the show’s set.
Today the spotlight falls on Maia Mitchell. Maia’s character Callie is finally finding her place among the Adams Foster family when the big “Brallie” secret of what really went on between her and Brandon is unboxed.
You can see video of the interview below; if written text is more your thing, you can find transcription underneath. And, of course, browse KSiteTV for more Fosters content including more interviews and photos from the season premiere!
KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: Does Callie feel that she has betrayed Brandon in any way by telling the moms exactly what happened?
KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: Does Callie feel that she has betrayed Brandon in any way by telling the moms exactly what happened?
MAIA MITCHELL: Yeah. There’s definitely a level of guilt when she has to tell him what’s happened. It’s heavy. It’s not easy for her to say and I don’t think she’s – she’s not really an entitled person, so I think whenever she’s putting someone else out, she definitely feels guilty, so, yeah. But I think she also is just owning it and is just so overwhelmed by the situation that I think Brandon’s feelings aren’t totally in the front of her concerns, but it’s definitely hard for her to tell him what happened.
Does the drama that happens in the season premiere help her relax a little bit, in a strange way?
Yeah. It’s an interesting point. It kind of does, because once you’ve gotten everything out there… it’s been a huge secret for them, a cross for them to both bear. You’ll see them working through it, and obviously they’re going to have to face and deal with it for a while. It’s difficult, but once they are past it, it’s a relief.
Callie always wants to help people. Did what happened with Justina affect or change that?
Callie always wants to help people. Did what happened with Justina affect or change that?
No. If anything, I think it just made everything to do with foster care and the rights of young people even more real. She ends up going on a new escapade, of course: She discovers that an ex-foster brother that she used to live with has been wrongfully convicted of murder, and so she goes on this kind of detective spree trying to prove his innocence. That takes up most of her season, actually, and you definitely see that kind of fighter within her coming out in that form.
So this could be Callie’s Serial?
Yeah! She’s Sarah Koenig, basically, yeah! [laughs]
What does Callie think of Brandon at this point, now that all of this has come out?
Her and Brandon definitely go through some stuff. I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say about Brandon’s living situation, but she doesn’t really agree with the way that Brandon deals with the moms’ judgement of them, and he kind of starts having rifts with the parents and she’s quite judgmental of that, because she’s sort of owning what they did wrong a little bit more than he is, and he is quite an entitled person, so I think she’s just quite judgmental of that. So, they’re not super close this season. You don’t see them really working together on much. They coexist, but their connection is a little bit damaged.
Do you think Callie is personally feeling more settled as a part of the Adams Foster family?
Yeah. I think definitely this season, you see her really just accept the one thing that could have broken it all didn’t, and I think she is able to really accept that love that she hasn’t really been able to get to.
How does Callie respond to Jude’s situation?
How does Callie respond to Jude’s situation?
I don’t know. I think she’s just letting him figure it out. That’s kind of what it is when you’re a kid and you’re figuring it all out, dating different people… I think she’s just letting him do his thing.
Can you tease anything else about the season premiere and the situations they get into?
This first couple of episodes are predominantly about what’s happening with Nick and Mariana, and the shooting or potential shooting… you definitely see that kind of take over what they’re going through, and everything else, all the little things, all the little dramas between the characters come quite peripheral, especially for Callie and the moms. I don’t know if I can get into super-specifics, but yeah.
What can you tell me about what’s coming up between Callie and A.J.?
You see them being really sweet! I really like A.J. because I think he grounds Callie and is just, like, a good, consistent person for her in this world of chaos that she creates for herself. Who knows if it’ll last, but they definitely build on their relationship, and it becomes quite a lovely, trusting thing for Callie.
