NBC has cancelled freshman drama The Enemy Within, it was confirmed today.
Coming on the same day as the cancellations of Abby’s and The Village, the news is no real surprise considering that NBC waited weeks after upfronts to make its decision. The network renewed low-rated Friday drama Blindspot for an abbreviated final season and ordered another new procedural in Bone Collector-based Lincoln, which meant that The Enemy Within had no space to air or creative need to fill. The series had moments of ratings potential early in its run, but it couldn’t build the momentum it needed to earn a renewal.
From Ken Woodruff (The Mentalist), The Enemy Within followed imprisoned former CIA operative Erica Shepherd (Jennifer Carpenter) as she gets enlisted by FBI Agent Will Keaton (Morris Chestnut) to help track down an elusive killer she knows all too well.
In addition to Carpenter and Chestnut, The Enemy Within starred Kelli Garner (The Aviator) and Raza Jaffrey (Smash).
This marks the final upfronts decision that NBC needed to make. The lone 2018-19 series still in renewal limbo both belong to CBS – freshman drama The Code, which will be airing into the summer, and limited series The Red Line.
The series finale of The Enemy Within aired earlier this month on NBC. You can check out KSiteTV’s thoughts on the NBC fall schedule here.
