The trip to Paris Fashion Week should’ve been a reward for Kat’s hard work in becoming Scarlet’s first black female department head. At such a young age, she was already able to stand on the shoulders of those who came before her and achieve something meaningful, so getting to go to Paris was a major milestone in her professional life. However, Paris also brought clarity in her personal endeavors, as she realized that Adena hadn’t created anything since they got together. Kat knew how much important art was to Adena’s sense of self, so rather than try to force something that might not feel right anymore, she let her go.
On the season premiere of The Bold Type, Kat still isn’t feeling right after breaking up with Adena. The grief that she carries for their relationship is lingering just as much a month after she returned to New York as it did the moment things ended, but it’s not something that she feels like she can broadcast to the outside world. Not only does verbalizing her pain and working through the breakup make it real, she knows that she’s in an image-conscious industry that could pounce on the vulnerability of a newly promoted queer black woman. But once she receives an assignment to amp up her social media presence following a too-long sabbatical, Kat’s forced to face her grief and realize that even in the world of publishing, sometimes it’s okay to be human.
Elsewhere on The Bold Type, Jane crusades against Scarlet hiring tech wunderkind Patrick Duchand to run the company’s digital branch, while Sutton and Richard contemplate taking the next step in their relationship.
The season premiere of The Bold Type airs Tuesday at 8:00 on Freeform.
