Though Jane’s personal life has been active via her short-lived relationship with Ryan and this new thing she’s created with Ben, her primary focus has always been her career. She wants nothing more than to build the type of career for herself that she always dreamed about, one in which she’s a respected journalist with a platform that supports her desire to write about substantive issues. Not only would this disrupt the stereotypes people have about Scarlet and young women writers in general, it would allow Jane to speak to the type of girl that she was when she first discovered Scarlet and when her love of writing really began to flourish. But what happens when Jane’s professional tunnel vision is confronted with a personal surprise?
On the next episode of The Bold Type, Jane experiences a pregnancy scare with Ben after the condom breaks while having sex. It’s remedied by the morning after pill, but after experiencing heavy side effects, a visit to her gynecologist reveals that Jane has to start thinking about her reproductive future sooner than she thought. Where Jane is a carrier of the BRCA gene, she might eventually have to have her ovaries removed, so now is the time when she has to figure out if she wants kids, how many she wants, whether she wants to freeze her eggs or get pregnant already, etc. It’s a lot for a 25-year-old with a rising career to think about, especially with Jane’s lingering grief over the loss of her mother. Would having a child and getting a chance to be the mother she never had be a good decision for Jane? Or would she be better off delaying children until she gets a better handle on her health plan and more clout in her journalism career?
Elsewhere on The Bold Type, Kat jumps at the chance to become the spokesperson for a beauty brand, only to realize that things aren’t quite as they seemed, while Sutton finds herself in charge of the fashion department’s budget for the first time.
