Sutton’s unwavering motivation to build her career results from an independent streak she was forced to adopt as a teenager. With her mother a substance abuser who moved from man to man, Sutton couldn’t rely on her for advice, support (be it financial or emotional), or anything that a typically hands-on parent is responsible for. She was essentially on her own from an early age, something that gave her a complex in her personal relationships but granted her the type of professional focus we see today. Understandably, Sutton never wants to have to rely on anyone again, but what happens when her trip to Paris forces her to revisit her past?
On the next episode of The Bold Type, Sutton’s excitement over her impending Fashion Week debut gets tempered by news that she has to locate her original birth certificate. Without it, she won’t be able to go and the notice is short enough that neither mailing nor any of her personal connections are an option. Instead, she has to trudge her way back to Harrisburg to get her documentation from her mother; the two haven’t been in contact for years and Sutton’s grudge against Babs is as deep and real as ever, but her desire for professional upward mobility, as well as a reward for how hard she’s been working for Oliver, trumps the anger and abandonment issues she still clings to. But will this trip to a past she left behind long ago be a way for Sutton to heal her emotional wounds? Or could facing Babs again be too overwhelming for her to handle?
