When Sutton decided to prioritize her career over her relationship with Richard, she knew she was taking a risk. The feelings that she felt for him were very real, but she couldn’t start her career with people thinking she’s only getting opportunities because of who she’s dating; even if they eventually broke up, and even if she eventually went on to great things, there would always be a segment of the fashion world who thought that she slept her way to a career. Without Richard, now is the time for her to put her head down and make her mark through her professional relationship with Oliver, but what happens when a friendship is threatened by Sutton’s newfound ambition?
On the next episode of The Bold Type, Sutton is put into an awkward position when Kat lobbies for Scarlet hiring Adena for an upcoming accessories shoot. As Oliver is out of town, Sutton’s solely in charge of this shoot and feeling the pressure to get it right, which means that hiring someone who’s not used to being a hired gun for magazines and whose style tends to be more gallery than glossy isn’t a slam dunk. Though she likes Adena and doesn’t want to cause an argument with Kat, this is Sutton’s opportunity to show Oliver that she can handle more responsibility and that the jitters she showed during the #NotAllMen shoot have all been exorcised. To deviate from the expected shoot budget and style could seriously kneecap her chances of forward movement at Scarlet, but could a change in perspective be exactly what the accessories shoot needs?
