Despite the risk that comes with pursuing a fashion career, Sutton wants nothing more than to go after her dreams and live the life she always wanted. She got conservative by going into finance, allowing her issues with her mother and the fear of not being able to support herself goad her away from her passion, and she’s realized that now is as good a time as any to correct that mistake. If things don’t actually work out with fashion, she has a solid (if unexciting) backup plan, but she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she didn’t at least give this a shot, lack of prior fashion experience be damned.
On the next episode of The Bold Type, a mix-up at work causes Oliver to think that Sutton is the assistant candidate with an extensive fashion background and that her competition is the girl who hasn’t even worked at the mall. This puts Sutton in a tough spot; if she allows Oliver to continue thinking that she has the experience necessary for this job, she could work herself into the role of assistant and possibly do well enough that he’d never suspect that she omitted the truth. However, this would do a number on Sutton’s conscience, as she could never be fully comfortable in a job that she knew she didn’t obtain under the right circumstances. Especially considering the fact that Oliver could run a background check on her and see that she doesn’t have the credentials he thought she did. As much as Sutton might want to get away from Lauren’s desk, is she desperate enough to allow Oliver to continue believing the lie?
