Two episodes into its fifth season, The CW’s post-apocalyptic drama The 100 has been renewed for a sixth season, it was confirmed today.
The renewal itself doesn’t come as a surprise, given the show still has solid ratings and a passionate fan base and The CW will be expanding to Sundays come this fall. Season five has been averaging 2.1 million total viewers and fortified the show as one of The CW’s most valuable midseason players, a reliability that The CW could use more of. However, it had been unclear whether the decision was going to be announced in time for upfronts or if The 100 was going to be treated like a summer show, with its fate decided deeper into its episode order.
With Valor and Life Sentence set to be cancelled, the lone CW bubble show remains iZombie, which should also benefit from the extra scheduling space, The CW getting 70 episodes out of every Pedowitz-era drama (bar The Carrie Diaries) that made it to a second season, and the network said to be entertaining more limited seasons for its veterans. However, the show’s ultimate fate could rest upon how many of the 10 (!) projects The CW has in development that get picked up.
The 100 airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on The CW.
