Blu-ray Review: Supernatural: The Complete Fifteenth Season

The fifteenth and final season of Supernatural finally hits Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday, May 25, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has provided KSiteTV with a review of the final season set to review, so that’s what we’re reviewing here!

Here’s how the final season of the series is described:

The epic journey of the Winchester brothers come to a close as SUPERNATURAL enters its fifteenth and final season. Sam, Dean and Castiel have battled the forces of darkness in an unending quest to save the world. But in the season 14 finale, they faced off against God Himself – refusing to kill their surrogate son Jack, and thus bringing about God’s decision to end this reality once and for all…

So what have we got inside of it?

The Episodes: The 20 episodes of Supernatural Season 15 that took over a year to air, completing the journeys of Sam, Dean, Cas and Jack, are included here, and as always with being Blu-ray, the episodes look fantastic. Some plot threads are completed and some familiar faces returned. There’s tragedy, as always with Supernatural, and there’s the conclusion. Obviously, the ending was not able to include everything that producers had hoped, but I actually felt the ending was a bit special in itself, without giving away spoilers. In my mind, all of the character reunions that were meant to happen where the characters ended up, still happened. We just didn’t get to see them, but what’s in my imagination is pretty great. Yes, it would have been great to see some of them in the flesh, but still, it’s amazing how this show has come full circle, and I highly recommend breaking out the Season 1 sets afterward to see all that changed over 327 episodes. It was quite a journey.

That long journey is highlighted in “Supernatural: The Long Road Home,” a special retrospective originally aired on The CW on the night of the finale, and there are additional features that I’ll get into under “Extras.”

The Extras: Every year, Supernatural is consistently the Blu-ray season set that doesn’t skimp, providing a lot of extras. In addition to some things that had been seen before, there’s a full list of features in addition to the retrospective mentioned above. Again, a lot of these spotlight the long journey. The 2019 Comic-Con panel, which seems so long ago now, is included, as are some deleted scenes that longtime fans will surely be happy to see. Here’s the full listing of extras:

Supernatural: The End of the Road (New)
Supernatural: Family Don’t End in Blood (New)
    Gag Reel (New)
    Deleted Scenes (New)
    Supernatural: 2019 Comic-Con Panel
    Winning Baby: A Supernatural Giveaway
    Winchester Mythology: Midwestern Heroes
Supernatural: The Long Road Home – Special Retrospective Episode

But again, WBHE constantly outdoes themselves with Supernatural, and I wish other series from all studios were given the same attention, to keep the medium of physical media in a world where a lot of the audience might just be content to watch on Netflix. It’s great to offer an actual reason to buy these things, and these extra features definitely give fans their money’s worth.

Packaging & Design: I like it. It’s consistent with all that has come before, but it also features the show’s four leads at the top with the show’s “fifth lead,” “Baby,” at the bottom.

Is It Worth It? It was a joy and a privilege to cover Supernatural for at least ten of the 15 seasons it was on the air. The cast, the crew… everyone worked hard and was so welcoming to us whenever we were on set, and that love and care also showed on the screen. I know some fans might not be happy with how some storylines shook out, and I respect that, but for me, it was a satisfying end to a long road.

Of course, I’d sooner recommend the Supernatural Complete Series set, which I would have loved to have reviewed and contains all of these extras and more, but if you’ve already got Seasons 1-14 and want to finish your set, of course, don’t stop there! Season 15 can be ordered on Amazon.com (where an affiliate link can support this site!) here.
