ABC has confirmed that firefighter drama Station 19 has been renewed for a second season.
Though Station 19 has only put up okay numbers this season, it’s easily the standout of ABC’s tepid midseason drama class in terms of both ratings and potential upside. In order to give the show a considerable relaunch and make progress toward its goal of a more procedural drama slate, ABC will likely use the connection with parent show Grey’s Anatomy to give Station 19 a crossover-fueled jump start this coming fall. Even if it never rises to the towering ratings heights of previous Grey’s lead-out Scandal, the show could become a valuable piece for ABC if it not only furthers the rebranding that The Good Doctor helped with this season, but provides them with a steady audience that can keep Thursdays vital in the post-TGIT era.
From Stacy McKee (Grey’s Anatomy), Station 19 finds Seattle Fire Department’s 19th Station amidst personnel upheaval, with Lieutenant Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz) rising to Acting Captain after her father Captain Pruitt is injured in an apartment fire. The series follows Andy as she adjusts to the new position and navigates the sometimes complicated interpersonal dynamics that come with a group of people putting their lives on the line daily.
In addition to Ortiz, Station 19 stars Jason George (Grey’s Anatomy), Grey Damon (Twisted), Alberto Frezza (Dead of Summer), Barrett Doss (Iron Fist), Jay Hayden (Battleground), Okieriete Onaodowan (Hamilton), Danielle Savre (Too Close to Home), and Miguel Sandoval (Medium).
The season finale of Station 19 is set to air Thursday, May 17th at 9:00 on ABC.
