The CW’s new TV season starts tonight with the return of DC’s Stargirl at 8PM ET/PT! Last week, we shared some quotes from series star Brec Bassinger about what we can expect from the season arc (spoiler: there’s a MURDER!); today, we’re spotlighting the return of Sylvester Pemberton (aka Starman, as played by Joel McHale), the new “frenemies” in Blue Valley, and whether or not we have a crossover in our future. So, of course, we started by asking Brec Bassinger about the fate of the cosmic staff now that its earlier owner, Sylvester, is back in the picture.
“Going into this season, it was so fun because I had those same questions,” Brec told us. “I was like, ‘who is the staff going to work for? Who does the staff belong to? And did Starman come back to take the staff, to become Starman again?’ I think Courtney has all those questions as well, going in, and they are explored throughout the season,” she promises. It shouldn’t be a spoiler that we do see Sylvester handling the staff at some point, and the way he moves and handles it is different from how Courtney uses it.
“Just naturally, I’m 5’1.5″ on a good day. Joel McHale is 6’5.” He towered over me, and the staff is shorter than him, so even with just how we’re built, we can do different stuff… different spins, different tricks. We’re also built very differently, not just our height, so the different things we can do, just happened naturally,” Brec explains.
Sylvester Pemberton isn’t the only face returning to Blue Valley, however… the Sportsmaster and Tigress have moved in next door to the Whitmore-Dugan clan! This causes some conflict with Pat (Luke Wilson), who isn’t as open to their supposed reformation as Courtney is.
“Courtney very much feels like there is good even in the worst of people, including Sportsmaster and Tigress,” Brec said. “She feels like everyone can turn a new leaf and be good, so she’s really advocating for the villains for a long time. But they have some bad tendencies that make not only Pat question, but also Sylvester, because the last time he saw them, they were killing him and his friends, and they literally put him into the dirt. So even more than Pat, there’s quite an uproar with Sylvester which is of course natural, considering his last experience [with them].”
Courtney’s openness also extends to the JSA, where Cindy Berman has been hanging out with the team. While Courtney and Beth are open to having Cindy as an ally, Yolanda and Rick aren’t as welcoming. “Courtney wants to find that good in everyone, because she believes it’s there,” Brec explains. “Getting her teammates on board is a different story.”
Finally, could we see some crossovers between DC’s Stargirl and any remaining DC TV series on The CW?
“I sure hope so,” Brec enthused. “If anyone can do it, it’s Geoff Johns because he works on all the different shows. I know we’ve talked about it some, and we’re still hoping it can happen.”
