With Episodes heading into a final season, House of Lies recently concluding after five season, and Dice existing in television purgatory, Showtime has recently been addressing their need for comedy. Their latest move is ordering comedy pilot SMILF from Mixology alum Frankie Shaw.
Based on the award-winning animated short film of the same name, SMILF follows a single 20-something whose desire for sex and career upward mobility are complicated by the fact that she’s a single mother. Shaw is set to star in, write, produce, and direct the pilot, which currently doesn’t have a supporting cast. The series joins a comedy development slate that includes action two-hander Manhunt; anthology Mating; and showbiz commentary White Famous. For its part, SMILF is the only of this group to have a female lead.
In addition to her role on the ABC comedy, Shaw’s television credits include Mr. Robot, Flaked, and Hello Ladies. The second short that she wrote and directed, titled Too Legit and starring the likes of Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Lauren Weedman (Looking), was released earlier this year.
Do you think you would watch SMILF? What type of comedy do you want to see on Showtime? How much priority do you place on watching comedies in a timely manner vs. dramas?
