Ahead of its upfront presentation on Tuesday, Freeform has given mermaid drama Siren a second season renewal. Season two of the well-received series will feature 16 episodes, up from season one’s 10.
Based on a story by Eric Wald (View from the Top) and Dean White (The 100), and showran by Emily Whitesell (Finding Carter), Siren takes place in serene coastal town Bristol Cove, a beautiful refuge away from the world’s troubles. Once known as a haven for mermaids, the town is forced to grapple with the possibility that the folklore others dismiss might not be so silly after all upon the arrival of mysterious girl Ryn (Eline Powell). Before long, the battle between man and sea intensifies as the mermaids begin a fight to reclaim their right to the ocean.
In addition to Powell, Siren stars Alex Roe (The 5th Wave), Fola Evans-Akingbola (An American Exorcism), Ian Verdun (Life’s a Drag), and Rena Owen (Once Were Warriors).
The series, having debuted as the No. 1 new cable drama with young women 18-34 and 12-34, is part of a drama slate for Freeform that includes The Bold Type, Shadowhunters, and Famous in Love.
Siren airs Thursdays at 8:00 on Freeform.
