Freeform has announced that the second season of sci-fi drama Shadowhunters will be premiering Monday, January 2nd at 8:00, where it will be leading into the series premiere of thriller Beyond.
The second season premiere of Shadowhunters finds Valentine and The Circle growing stronger thanks to their possession of the Mortal Cup and Jace’s allegiance. Meanwhile, the response from The Clave proves disappointing to Clary, Alec, and Isabelle, fostering disillusion toward the Shadowhunter governing body and forcing loyalties to be tested with the fate of the world up in the air. Promotional photos from the Shadowhunters Season 2 premiere “The Guilty Blood,” just released by Freeform, can be found here.
Season two of Shadowhunters is set to have 20 episodes, up from the 13 episodes of season one. Interestingly, the show, which is the second strongest performer on Freeform behind Pretty Little Liars and the strongest new show the network has premiered in the past two seasons, is now on Mondays vs. its Tuesday slot this past summer. The move to 8:00 was expected given its strength and the absence of Pretty Little Liars, but ABC Family tended to keep its social issue/family dramas corralled on Mondays while letting its mysteries and supernatural dramas loose on Tuesdays. Freeform had continued that tradition with the rollouts of Dead of Summer and Recovery Road, so the fallout from the decision to make Shadowhunters a Monday lead-in vs. a Tuesday lead-in is something to keep an eye on going forward.
