At the end of the June 12 episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters, titled “You Are Not Your Own,” the relationship between Magnus and Alec seemed to be affected by the notion that Alec couldn’t immediately see that it was indeed Magnus inside the body of Valentine.
When we interviewed Harry Shum Jr. about the episode – you can read the longer interview here – we asked the actor what this could mean for “Malec” in the future.
“It definitely put a wrench on their relationship as far as trust goes,” Shum told us by telephone. “Even though he understands that he was in Valentine’s body, but the fact that he’s sharing these things with him, and him not believing that… you would think someone that you’re intimate with would at least investigate a little more. Not to say he didn’t. But I think that definitely puts it in the back of Magnus’ head, like ‘who do I trust anymore? And who knows me?’ Who does know him well enough to be able to utter a couple of words and then say ‘oh my God! This happened.’ This is possible in this universe that that would happen, right? But it’s hard, but you have Jace and others saying ‘no. Don’t trust him. It’s Valentine.’ It’s really hard to say, but it does affect the relationship in the long run,” he teased.
