Netflix has announced that the long-delayed Season 2 of their adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s The Sandman will be the final season. They have also released a new poster featuring the Endless family, and it appears this “final season” will be finally releasing in 2025.
“The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” showrunner Allan Heinberg told Netflix in a posting on Tudum.com. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
With 75 issues and numerous miniseries comprising near a dozen arcs for The Sandman comics, it is questionable that one could really “run out of story” — but, considering the recent revelations and allegations about The Sandman comic book creator Neil Gaiman, it is not surprising that the decision would be made to make this TV tale, well, not so Endless. It’s a shame, however, as the first season was a nearly perfect adaptation of those classic comics, but it’s understandable that now the property has been tainted. It appears there are no references to Gaiman on Netflix’s press release. It also should be pointed out that Netflix ended the fan-loved Dead Boy Detectives which had characters originally created by Gaiman; that series, at least, had its own direction and versions of the characters that were unique to the TV adaptation.
On the Tudum website, star Tom Sturridge (Dream) offered insight into the new season. “At the start of Season 2, Dream is in a place of rebuilding,” he said, adding that Dream has to reckon with his past decisions, “the consequences of which are enormous.”
Showrunner Allan Heinberg revealed that we will see that Dream has more skeletons in his closet. “Dream, having escaped his captivity in the waking world, has reclaimed his stolen tools and missing dreams, and is now focused on rebuilding his realm and attending to his duties,” he said. “That is, until the sins of his past catch up with him and make that impossible.
