Especially after watching this week’s episode of Riverdale titled “Body Double,” one might wonder if Polly Cooper, sister of Betty, even really exists.
Sure, there have been references to her as someone else, but what if it’s all a cruel trick by folks like Cheryl – referring to Polly to make Betty snap again? Could Polly be the Hyde to Betty’s Jekyll? I mean, it was a bit weird when she started talking about herself as Polly and making Chuck Clayton into “Jason.”
Visiting the Vancouver filming location for Riverdale on Thursday, KSiteTV was among a group of reporters who asked actress Lili Reinhart that very question… and the answer is that no, Betty is not Polly.
“I know [Episode 3] may allude to that, but truly, it’s just a moment of mental break, which I think everyone can relate to. She doesn’t actually have a split personality, she’s not actually schizophrenic, which is something that people have thought after seeing Episode 3,” Reinhart confirmed. “She cares about her sister so much, and the fact that something so terrible happened to her sister causes her to kind of break down and go into defense mode. Betty has a lot of built-up anxiety and anger and frustration. Tonight’s episode is kind of the boiling over point and that’s why you see her alter ego. I would say it’s more of an alter ego than a split personality. It’s her bad side coming out.”
As things ramp up for the next few episodes of the series, Betty will face more stresses, as it seems more and more that her parents have some shady things going on with Jason’s death, with Polly, and otherwise.
“Betty’s relationship with her parents has always been rocky and when she starts digging deeper into the murder with Jughead, she realizes that her parents aren’t as innocent as she thought. To begin with, her relationship with them wasn’t great. She doesn’t really trust them that much, and now that they’re wrapped up in the murder investigation, she distances herself,” Lili explained. Betty also goes into the situation with an “amazingly unbiased” perspective considering her close connection to her parents.
“If her parents do have anything to do with the murder, she is willing to find that out and she’s not willing to sacrifice her own personal feelings for the sake of solving this murder. She would rather know the truth and know her parents really do have something to do with it. In episode 6, that’s a big Betty and Polly episode, where she finds out what happened to Polly,” she revealed.
Indeed, the synopsis for “Chapter Six: Faster, Pussycats! Kill! Kill!” does mention Polly, who will be played by Tiera Skovbye. You can read the full spoiler description for that episode here.
