WARNING: Spoilers for the Riverdale April 19 episode “Love and Marriage” are being discussed within. If you haven’t watched yet, come back to read this later!
As we saw in the April 19 episode of Riverdale, a wedding between Archie Andrews and Cheryl Blossom in the 1950s is not meant to be…. and last week during our conversation with series lead KJ Apa (Archie), we got some insight on how this affects his own character.
“Cheryl is going through something completely different with their sexuality, and feels like she can’t be very open about it,” KJ said. “I don’t think [her and Archie] have a conversation about sexuality, but I think he gets to have that conversation – or help someone else with it – later in the season, which is really cool,” he hinted, surely referring to Casey Cott’s character, Kevin Keller.
“It brings out his innocence,” K.J. continued. “He’s very childlike in that way, where he just sees everyone as equal. He can’t quite get his head around why, just because someone’s different sexually, or who they’re attracted to…. he doesn’t understand why other people think that it’s not good. Imagine if the whole world thought like that.”
“I’m obsessed with that side of Archie,” he said, referring to “that pure hearted, good person that he is.”
Pureheart the Powerful, indeed.
