Recovery Road is a new series launching on Freeform (formerly ABC Family) on Monday night, and as many other shows on the network have taken on tough subjects, this one does too, in that it features a girl who has a problem with an addiction.
The series will see the main character Maddie (Jessica Sula) as she has to confront her addiction while also juggling secrets, recovery, and other challenges that face a young person.
At the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena, California, Executive Producer Bert V. Royal discussed the flashbacks that will be a framework for the show, revealing bits about each individual character in Maddie’s world.
“Within each episode, there are sort of flashbacks to their life before,” he said. “We thought it would be kind of fun to see ;what got you here’ because that’s such a big part of the program, is talking about your story.”
“We felt like if they just sat around and talked about it in meetings, it might get a little old. So we decided to institute a flashback system to really get to see the past of these people and sometimes their flashbacks are as young children. I think almost everybody up here has had a child play them at some point. It actually worked really well, I think,” he continued.
Time is also a factor in showing the recovery process for Maddie. “The first 10 episodes of our show cover the first 30 days, so we might play a little bit with time. That’s one of the things we’re talking about a lot. But I think it’s interesting. One of the big things about getting sober is then taking your message out into the world and helping others, and that’s what our characters do,” Royal said.
Recovery Road premieres Monday, January 25 at 9PM ET/PT on Freeform. Browse KSiteTV for more coverage of the show!
