    Young Justice #2.19 “Summit” Review

As we are one day away from the series finale of Young Justice, let’s take a look at what went down in the penultimate episode that aired last week: “Summit.”

    Official Synopsis:

“The Light calls a summit to decide the final fate of Aqualad, the team…and the entire planet Earth!”

If you have not seen this episode yet and don’t want to be spoiled, do not continue reading!

    REVIEW

For the show’s penultimate episode, and the great Greg Weisman’s last written episode, “Summit” was an excellent episode for several reasons. Opening the episode with so many villains in the same room was thrilling. While the first scene went a bit slowly, I didn’t mind, because everything that was revealed during that meeting was necessary; I want as much as possible wrapped up before we enter the big finale.

I wish the way Ra’s found out that Tigress was Artemis could had been done a bit better. It was a bit original to do it through a small reflection in a sword, but it was still way too easy and quick. Up until this point, aside from Psimon almost exposing her, Artemis has been able to keep the secret hidden so well from the enemies. To get exposed through a small thing like that wasn’t exactly what I was looking for in the end.

Luckily it didn’t ruin the episode, because what followed after she and Aqualad got shot was just fantastic. Particularly, it was the reveal that none of them had really died, and that Deathstroke was in fact Miss Martian in disguise, before the other heroes joined them for one of the show’s biggest showdowns.

One of the reasons why I loved this showdown so much was because he finally returned…Wally West! After being absent for so long, our favorite speedster was featured in this episode, which I’m forever grateful for; before this episode aired, I thought that Wally wasn’t going to show until the series finale. While the question to why he has been gone for so long remains, I’m definitely not complaining, because I appreciated every second and every line we got out of him.

Another thing that the showdown provided was a good look at how much better of a team the heroes have become over the past two seasons. Disguising themselves as soldiers, as well as the little play that Miss Martian, Aqualad and Artemis put on, were outstanding tactics. I didn’t expect to see Klarion pop out through Vandal’s ring, or to see him fly away with Warworld. It’s going to be interesting to see what he will unleash on the heroes next week, wherever he is right now. I almost forgot that Black Beetle is planning to destroy the earth now after what happened. It’s safe to say that our heroes will most certainly have their hands full.

“Summit” was one of Weisman’s best-written episodes, which really built up a lot of excitement for the series finale.

    ODDS & ENDS

    • “No more faking anyone’s death for at least a year, OK?” Well said, Beast Boy.
    • I wonder if Ra’s al Ghul looks into other swords’ reflections like he did in this episode with Artemis/Tigress sword.
    • Really Vandal? Are we honestly supposed to believe that during his existence in 50,000 years, nobody else has done worsd things to ruin his plans until Aqualad did what he did? I find that incredibly unlikely.
    • After they had gotten shot, there should had been a commercial break and once they returned, a voice should had said “if you are just joining us, Artemis and Aqualad has just been shot” – Smallville fans out there should get this joke.
    • Young Justice’s Slade Wilson should really look for some inspiration from Arrow’s Slade Wilson (played by the awesome Manu Bennett) for some hair fashion because that ponytail has to go at some point in Offscreenville.
    • Regarding Kid Flash’s little allusion to Impulse perhaps trading in his get-up for something more red and yellow: I really hope they do a little flash-forward in the finale and show us Bart in that suit. I can’t be the only one out there who hopes for that, right?
    • Where the heck was Roy—the clone—this week?! I really hope that he is part of the finale because he was always my favorite Roy out of the two of them. But on the bright side, another great interpretation of Roy just got promoted to series regular for season 2 of Arrow so even if I don’t get to see him one last time before this show ends, at least I will get a great dose of some sweet Roy Harper next year when I don’t have this show anymore.
    • Something that I haven’t mentioned a lot in previous reviews is the music on the show. The sequence when Aqualad and Artemis both revealed that they were still alive, as well as Deathstroke actually being Miss Martian in disguise, was some of my favorite music. I hope that at some point that they do release a Young Justice score later in the future, although I don’t know how often they do that for animated shows.

Young Justice: Invasion airs its series finale tomorrow, 10:30 AM on the DC Nation block on Cartoon Network. If you haven’t seen them yet, go here to check out the official description and images for the final episode.
