Tomorrow People: Advance Review Of Tonight’s Episode “Thanatos”

I’ve got to be honest: When I saw the new episode of The Tomorrow People that airs tonight (December 4) at 9PM (ET) on The CW, I thought it was the midseason finale. There are revelations abound; we get some big guest appearances… and we’re left with one heck of a cliffhanger. (It’s not a spoiler to tell you that, right?) So, I was planning on starting this advance review with “everything has led to this;” now, I’m thinking that next week’s episode, “Death’s Door,” might be even bigger… if that’s even possible.

ThanatosPart of what makes “Thanatos” fun is that it introduces two characters who should shake things up a little bit. There’s Aldus Crick, played by original Tomorrow People cast member Nicholas Young. To hear that familiar and authoritative voice again was amazing, and kind of reminded me of when Smallville got Christopher Reeve as Dr. Virgil Swann. Such a great tribute to the original series.

We also meet Jedikiah’s boss, “The Founder,” as played by Simon Merrells of Spartacus fame. Basically, if The Tomorrow People were He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and Jedikiah is Skeletor, then Merrells is playing Hordak. He seems a lot smarter and more ruthless than Stephen’s Uncle Jed. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jedikiah ever falls out of favor with his boss and ends up on the side of the good guys eventually.

ThanatosThere are some great flashbacks involving John (Luke Mitchell) where we learn another horrible secret about him: He was clean shaven! No, it’s something else, but we do hope present-day John keeps the stubble.

We also see Stephen’s father, Roger Price as played by Jeffrey Pierce, in flashbacks, which is always welcome… I’m still wondering, though, how long it will be before we learn more about whatever it seems his wife may be hiding.

Eight episodes in, and I still think this is a show worth checking out, though there are still a few things that I’m not totally feeling. I’d be totally okay with the double-agent aspect of Stephen being dropped, especially as people are getting closer, and I hope we see more female Tomorrow People beyond Cara and the occasional Irene, to switch things up a bit. Where’s Piper? I liked her a lot.

The Tomorrow People is new tonight after the highly anticipated coming of Barry Allen on Arrow, on The CW. Here are some promo images:
