The Carrie Diaries: Six Things About “A First Time For Everything” (Airs Tonight!)

The next-to-last episode of The Carrie Diaries Season 1 airs tonight (April 1) at 8PM on The CW. It’s called “A First Time For Everything” and as the show has been for a majority of its run, it’s a fun episode.

Here’s how the network describes it:

LOSING CONTROL — When Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) inadvertently complicates things with Sebastian (Austin Butler), she tries to fix it by taking him to Madonna’s “The Virgin Tour” launch party – but in her quest for the perfect night, only makes things worse. Despite Mouse’s (Ellen Wong) best efforts to avoid West (guest star RJ Brown), she can’t seem to deny the romantic sparks flying between them. Dorrit (Stefania Owen) turns to Donna LaDonna (Chloe Bridges) for advice about her budding love life. Meanwhile, Tom (Matt Letscher) has an awkward encounter when he spends the night somewhere new. Freema Agyeman also stars. Patrick Norris directed the episode written by Henry Alonso Myers (#112.)

I’ll probably save my thoughts on why The Carrie Diaries should be renewed or another season for another post, but I have to say that this is one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve seen this season, with characters that I can really love, and that is not April Fool’s sarcasm, either. I, too, was concerned that a Sex And The City prequel would be… not one of my favorite things, but Amy B. Harris and her cast and crew have made a special show here.

The CW held a screening for tonight’s episode last week, and here are six thoughts of what to expect:

    1. I’m coming to like Dorrit… and Donna LaDonna. Donna has always been a character that is designed so that you love to hate her, but in recent weeks, she’s started to crack to a point that some humanity is slipping through, and I’ll chalk that up a little bit to the actress who plays her, Chloe Bridges, being able to play Donna in a multi-faceted way. More surprising this week is how much I enjoyed the Dorrit storyline. We finally learn a little bit more about why she puts on that makeup and we start to see a transition. And, mark my words: Evan Crooks (Miller) is going to be the next teen idol. The show really should keep him, and his chemistry with Stefania Owen is great. Oh, and there’s some interaction between Dorrit and Donna… two characters that I wouldn’t expect to see together… that is just fantastic.

    2. Everyone seems ready to have sex! This is The CW, after all, but yes, sex is on the brain, whether it’s Carrie wanting it with Sebastian, Dorrit with Miller, or Mouse trying to hide her feelings for West. I’m sure if Walt was in this episode, he’d be thinking about it with Bennett, too.

    3. No Walt or Maggie. Normally I’d be kind of upset if two of my favorite characters were MIA, but the story is so full of other good stuff, it was fine.

    4. Will neurotic Carrie ruin her perfect night with Sebastian? Carrie brings Sebastian to the “Virgin Tour” Madonna launch party, and she’s so concerned with giving him the ideal experience, that she could end up ruining the plans for a romantic night. A chance encounter for Carrie at the party will hit home with why a Madonna tie-in was perfect for this episode.

    5. The music. There’s a very nice cover of “Like A Virgin” played in this episode. I love it when The Carrie Diaries plays remakes of 80’s classics.

    6. Tom’s hooking up with someone. Continuing the storyline from last week, Tom has met a fellow single parent, and the two of them start sneaking around as if they’re teenagers. I myself say “it’s not worth the drama,” but we will have to see how Tom feels.

All in all, if you’re not watching The Carrie Diaries, WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU? Seriously, though, this show deserves some more views, and it’s very easy to get into. Check it out at 8PM tonight on The CW.
