iZombie Season 2 Premiere “Grumpy Old Liv” Advance Review

The second season of iZombie premieres this Tuesday, October 6 on The CW, and I’m thankful to have Liv Moore and her cast of supporting characters back on my television screen. The series, starring Rose McIver, was a welcome surprise last year and I’m really glad The CW continued the show – and in its cushy post-Flash time slot – to start the new season.

Very quickly in “Grumpy Old Liv,” we get answers to how last season’s cliffhanger panned out, and Liv’s relationships have, of course, changed with everyone in the wake of the events of that finale. Liv is Major’s alibi for what exactly happened at Meat Cute, and it doesn’t seem like Clive is totally believing her story. The Clive/Liv dynamic is still one of my favorite parts of the show, and I’m convinced he at least has some idea that there’s something weird behind Liv’s behavior changes. I also like how characters like Blaine and Major have changed in their new respective situations,  and Ravi (Rahul Kohli) is always a treat to watch, especially in his scenes with Liv or Major.

ZMB201a_0219bI will say Liv’s behavior change this week might be the most off-putting part of the season premiere, as she takes on the personality of a grumpy, racist old man who was killed. While the response is quite funny, and McIver sells it, it might not be the best first impression for new viewers if they’re jumping on with the season premiere.

Obviously, for some characters there are new situations, but I feel this is the same iZombie that I fell in love with last season, and like I said, I’m so glad that we’re getting more. There are so many shows that get overly bogged down in their own continuity where I feel a show like this, while having some continuing threads, really moves forward… and, as I have said before, iZombie possibly has the best procedural vs. serialized mixture in all of modern-day TV. Definitely worth checking out.

iZombie Season 2 premieres Tuesday, October 6 on The CW. Take a look at some photos from the season premiere below:

Rose McIver is as good as they get. What a challenge it must be to completely change her character each week, yet she completely becomes embraces the personalities flawlessly, and never better than in the season 2 premiere.

She was beyond laugh-out-loud funny with her shocking racial comments that I’d never thought I hear again on TV, and I loved her subtle “old man” posture with its aches and pains.

I’d wondered where the show could go after the season finale wipeout, and I hoped they’d be able to maintain the humor, the heartbreak, and the suspense, not to mention a coherent storyline, but they did it all and succeeded beyond my wildest expectations, even managing to bring back some fringe characters I’d so appreciated in season 1 with the promise of expanding their roles.

Now we await Peyton. Her return should be one of the highlights of the season.
