Gossip Girl’s dramatic 100th episode started and ended with more than one big blast, as last night’s episode answered and raised questions about Manhattan’s elite. I would like to warn for those that have yet to see the milestone, do not read this review that will contain huge spoilers. For those that have seen the episode, keep your eyes open.
Review:
As a fan of Gossip Girl, I have never been as surprised and speechless as when I watched this episode. I underestimated how this episode would turn out but let’s get into it, shall we.
Let’s begin with the main storyline of the episode – the wedding. Ever since the beginning of this season, I was hoping that the wedding would turn out to be a disaster, that Blair, who I sees as one of the show’s (sometime) smartest women, would come to realization that Louis was just an evil frog and not a warm-hearted prince and reunite with the love of her life – Chuck Bass.
But then there has been these episodes where a car accident followed by a pact to “God” followed by decision of forcing herself to love Louis that just been interrupting my favorite ship. I must say that I’m both disappointed but also sympathetic for her decision. She believes in God, I get that and she wants to keep her promise to the man upstairs but as a non-religious person that I feel a “God” should never be standing in the way for true love but sadly, Blair didn’t see that. But what I didn’t see was Louis’s 180 and his mask coming off as a charming prince and reveals after the ceremony, that Blair was trapped – this marriage is just as the bastard said “a contract”. I can’t even express myself how much I hate this character – I have hated him ever since his return in season 4 but I think Hugo Becker makes a really good villain so don’t mistake me for hating the actor; I just hate the character.
I have always had my suspicions that if they would get married that he would do something like this after a certain time, but not as early as right after the ceremony. I don’t know if I can call Blair stupid, naïve or clueless but I must say that Blair has lost a little bit of her “Queen B” this season because of this devil but at the same – her absence from Chuck’s life has transformed him into an even better man, which makes it even more logical that Blair should get together with him.
I think the final scene with Blair, who leaves with Dan, pretty much repays that missing “Queen B” that I was talking about – if she now suddenly wants to get together with Dan, well although I feel pretty confident that that coming storyline (I don’t know if that will happen but they will be together in some way, friendly or lovely) would end after a while. I prefer to see her with Lonely boy than the devil but what I don’t get is – why can’t she just divorce him or something like that? I know that on this show, keeping your pride and dignity is imperative to these characters, which is why blackmailing is so acceptable for them but for the love of Chuck, why couldn’t Blair just brave up and ask for a divorce? (Forgive me for my lack of knowledge about legal rights in marriages) Well I’m looking forward to see how this ends and I think it’s interesting that Blair is having as big of dramatic storyline as Serena had back in season 1 with Georgina, which was also a really nice tribute to the shows early seasons. While I’m at the weeding, I must confess my love for Eleanor Waldorf and the actress, Margaret Colin, every time she is in an episode, I’m entertained in so many ways especially by the chemistry between Leighton and her. But last night, I was touched that she saw that Chuck is right for her daughter.
Serena and her struggling feelings for Dan – I must say that I didn’t expect Serena to regain her feelings for her lost lonely boy but still, I’m liking it but it feels already that Dan will break her heart in the next coming 11 episodes but hey, I didn’t see half of what this episode had, coming so who know. But that plot felt so small, even though Blair tried persuading her to step up, her musical dance dream as Marilyn Monroe, which I was entertained by because while it was a pleasure to watch, it was nice to see Serena’s feelings being expressed in a dream, like Blair usually does. But the reason why I loved Serena so much in this episode (which I do in every episode as she is my favorite character + Blake Lively is for me, like Leighton Meester, one of the best actresses of the show), she did what Blair couldn’t – telling the truth to Chuck.
While “It girl” satisfied me in this episode, “Lonely boy” didn’t, however I loved that he rescued Blair in the end but man, Dan was really useless in this episode – let’s see, he replaced as one of Louis’s best man’s, he had previously written the vows for the devil himself, he was still obsessed over Blair while Serena expresses her feelings for him and…yep I think that’s it – useless. Being the 100th episode, I couldn’t imagine Dan being as useless as he was last night. I hope that he along will Blair will starting in next week’s episode that he can find those balls that he has lost because Dan is better than the Dan that I saw last night.
Nate, Nate, Nate – I had no problems with him in this episode, I like that they are bringing in the real Charlie Rhodes but how long until we see Charlie Rhodes vs. “Charlie Rhodes”? I have been looking forward for a confrontation ever since Ivy showed up, that the real Charlie would eventually make her blast into the show and now she has. Better watch out Ivy, if Charlie Rhodes ever finds out what you have been up too, you are in for one hell of a ride. But let’s not forget the bad ass of the show, or half-ass to be exact – Chuck Bass, what’s going on with him? Ever since Chuck started changing his behavior as well as actually letting himself grow up, I sometimes still see the little boy who couldn’t ask for love from his father, in him. He loves Blair; he is closer to being a real man than he ever has and mature like never before. I’m just sad that by the time that he tried to find her (just to apologize), it was too late as she had already left but I admire that he did try. Overall, Chuck’s role in this episode was at least more than satisfying and way better than the disappointment that was Dan Humphrey.
But now – here is perhaps the juiciest part of the milestone: Georgina freaking Sparks! She really is the villain of the story. I love to hate her but at the same time, I love her too because she is just one of the greatest villains there is. But I just need to say that Georgina being a mother = so wrong, but it’s entertaining. I knew that her return would cause a lot of drama because let’s face it, she’s Georgina Sparks. She wanted revenge, classic G and every time she wants it – I’m having a blast. But the final shot of this episode, gave the fanboy (yes, I just used fanboy in a Gossip Girl sentence) within me almost a heart attack.
Georgina is Gossip Girl!(?) NO! YES! What?! I’m confused, has she really been Gossip Girl for all this time? There’s no way that she could be, or is there a way that she could be? I loved this because it does make sense but at the same time, it doesn’t. I’m hoping that this storyline, (since Michelle Trachtenberg will be staying for a while) will end with a bang or in this cast, a blast! Could the real Gossip Girl and Georgina, be in some sort of alliance? I have always been dreaming that Kristen Bell (who is the narrator for the voice of Gossip Girl) would be the face of GG when time comes when Gossip Girl’s identity is about to be explored. Seriously, I can’t wait for the next episode because this season just got even more interesting than before. What a twist! I don’t think there has ever been a big twist as this one.
I must congratulate executive producer and writer of this episode, Joshua Safran, and great direction by director Mark Piznarski. Safran really dropped a lot of bombs in this episode, and I think the last 11 episodes of this season will be even better now because of what he has set in motion in “G.G.” Let’s just hope that my hypothesis will turn out to be correct starting next week.
