Advance Review: The Flash “Flash of Two Worlds” (Airs TONIGHT!)

Tonight, The CW’s top series The Flash brings in another major concept from the comic book universe – the notion of multiple Earths and other realities – with the coming of Jay Garrick, the Flash of another world. While these concepts may seem heady for someone not well versed in the comics lore, the show handles the situation very well.

Teddy Sears as Jay Garrick is a different kind of Flash than Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen has been. For one, he’s dressed like a FTD flowers mascot. Kidding. But really, Sears’ approach to the power and responsibility is different from Barry Allen, and there’s a lot the two can learn from one another… at least, if Barry decides to trust him. Having been burned by Harrison Wells in the past, Barry is reluctant to trust another “mentor.” I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that both Sears and Gustin handle these scenes really well.

Other characters like Caitlin warm easily to Jay, who might hold the key on how to stop this week’s villain of the week, “the Sand Demon.” And, of course, there’s more great interaction between Cisco and Martin Stein, who deserve a buddy-scientist show of their own.

Also in this episode, we meet Shantel VanSanten as Patty Spivot. Patty’s a great addition to the cast, and she’s not the Felicity Smoak clone that it sounded like she would be…. yes, she has her own dorkiness, but Barry has his own dork side too, so it works out. She has some great scenes, especially with Grant and with Jesse L. Martin.

There are some other big surprises that have remained unspoiled and hopefully will remain so until the episode airs tonight at 8PM on The CW. We can tell you that one of those surprises involves an incredibly done visual effects sequence by the team that should’ve gotten an Emmy last year for their work on the show.

As great as The Flash Season 1 was, it is sometimes expected for a show to slow down or falter in a second year. The Flash is still running full speed ahead, and I’m still loving it.

“Flash of Two Worlds” airs TONIGHT at 8PM on The CW. Take a look at some preview photos here!
