Camila and Epifanio’s relationship has always been about power. During their better days, power acted as an aphrodisiac, each becoming intoxicated by the other’s ambition and their mutual goal of becoming the leading cartel in Mexico. However, Camila steadily grew tired of being second-in-command in a business she helped build from the ground up, so much so that she would rather take the risk of having something to call her own, a sense of independence and self-sufficiency she couldn’t find under Epifanio’s watch, than come crawling back home for a life under her husband’s thumb. But is there room enough in the same industry for both she and Epifanio?
On the second season premiere of Queen of the South, Camila is confronted with divorce papers from Epifanio, who wants his wife to allow him to operate undisturbed. He’s willing to legally let Camila go and not stand in the way of her attempts to go it alone as long as she agrees to stop interfering with his business – no more trying to sway his men over to her side, no more blatant attempts at obstructing the flow of his business. Shaken from Epifanio trumping the bluff she laid down, which features pages from the book she doesn’t have, Camila could have taken the deal and truly lived her life independently for the first time; granted, she and Epifanio would still be in the same industry, and there’s no guarantees that he would keep to his word, but the prospect of a real attempt at building something for herself must’ve been tempting. However, it didn’t outweigh Camila’s lingering feelings for (and distrust toward) her husband or the comfort she finds in the inherent chaos of the drug business, so when given the option between divorce and war, Camila makes it known that she’s ready for battle.
Elsewhere on Queen of the South, a newly empowered Teresa attempts to broker a deal with a smuggler whose eccentricities prove difficult to work around, while Epifanio’s newest partner might not be so willing to bow at his feet.
