Deadline is reporting that the FOX drama pilot centered on a Goonies re-enactment has set Ramon Rodriguez (The Affair) as its male lead.
From Sarah Watson (The Bold Type), the untitled series centers on Stella Cooper, a woman who attempted to make it in New York but new finds herself back in her hometown substitute teaching. Her creative side doesn’t lie dormant for long, though, as she connects with three students who are looking to film a shot-for-shot remake of The Goonies. If ordered, the series would follow the students pursuing their dreams and Stella finding the inspiration and purpose she’s so long lacked.
Rodriguez will play former Marine Jax, a mysterious local who owns the town hardware store. Jax is one of the few people in Ridgeville who didn’t grow up there and bonds with Stella upon her return to town.
The untitled Goonies series is one of just four drama pilots in contention at FOX for 2020-21, joining underdog dance ensemble The Big Leap; The Cleaning Lady, which stars Shannyn Sossamon as a Filipina doctor who moves to the United States looking for medical care for her son only to end up working for the mob; and genetic genealogy procedural Blood Relative.
In addition to his role on the Showtime drama, Rodriguez’s television credits include Gang Related, Iron Fist, and The Wire.
