CRAIG: Resurrection had a great launch at midseason. Will it be able to keep up that momentum for an entire season?
SHILO: Resurrection won’t have nearly the same launch that it did following the Oscars, but I think it could steady itself and become a pretty decent player for ABC for a number of reasons. Airing in the fall should stave off some of the seasonal decline that every show faces, while Resurrection could be buoyed by the Once Upon a Time episodes that feature characters from Frozen. If they draw a large enough crowd of casual viewers and the opening episodes of Resurrection season two are easily digestible enough for those who haven’t watched the first season, the cameos could provide enough juice to the undead drama to keep it from having a sophomore slump.
But Resurrection still dropped nearly every week following its series premiere and found itself plagued by unrest concerning its creative direction. Even with lighter fall competition than what it had to deal with in spring, regaining some audience and earning back the trust it might have lost during season one could prove to be difficult, especially as serialized dramas tend to lose audience rather than gain. Overall, though, I think given the depleted state of ABC’s dramas and the relatively favorable situation it’s been put in, Resurrection will at least be in the mix for a renewal, even if it does drop during its second season.
