THURSDAY
SHILO: 8:00 Young Sheldon; 8:30 Bob (Hearts) Abishola; 9:00 Mom; 9:30 Carol’s Second Act; 10:00 SWAT
CRAIG: 8:00 Young Sheldon; 8:30 Bob (Hearts) Abishola; 9:00 Mom; 9:30 Broke in Reseda; 10:00 Tommy
SHILO: Without the Big Bang halo, premiering two new comedies on Thursday, especially one at 9:30, isn’t an amazing option, but Man with a Plan is their new Rules of Engagement and no other bubble comedy is really strong enough to warrant a reach renewal. Sheldon is understandably called up to lead-in duty and boosts fellow Chuck Lorre comedy Bob (Hearts) Abishola, a romantic comedy starring Mike & Molly alum Billy Gardell. CBS loves Chuck Lorre and (probably) the idea of keeping Thursdays 8:00 – 9:30 as a bloc of his shows, so even if it’s just ordered as a thank you for Big Bang‘s run, I think Bob (Hearts) Abishola is penciled in here. For 9:30 I went with Patricia Heaton comedy Carol’s Second Act, which thematically works with Mom while bolstering CBS-familiar star power and a premise that could appeal to their core demo.
Even though SWAT looked a little rough at the beginning of the season and continues to be plagued by CBS not owning it, I think its performance has improved enough to fully warrant a third season renewal. Where so much change is happening earlier in the night, CBS keeps it here for stability’s sake.
CRAIG: I’m going a bit bolder here: While I agree Bob (Hearts) Abishola will be an ideal candidate for that 8:30 slot, I actually have Broke in Reseda starring CBS favorite Pauley Perette at 9:30…. although, I can see where Carol’s Second Act could go here with Broke going on Mondays. Either way, I expect something female and new to go at 9:30, and I actually have something female-fronted for 10PM: Tommy starring Edie Falco as the first female police chief of Los Angeles.
