SHILO’S SUPERLATIVES
Most Promising Trailer: American Crime. Even though it could easily turn into Crash: The TV Series, I’m curious how something like this will adapt to being on a network like ABC.
Most Anticipated New Show: Galavant. The script is a delight and I like the cast assembled, but this is going to either be a revelation or a complete disaster and I’m in either way.
Best Scheduling Move: Moving SHIELD to 9:00 and getting it away from NCIS. The show will be airing in the hour with the highest HUT levels and goes into season two with some creative momentum, so being away from NCIS and facing two networks worth of single-cams and an unproven NCIS spin-off is a fairly favorable arrangement.
Worst Scheduling Move: Not bringing back a veteran comedy as schedule spackle. I understand why comedies like Suburgatory and The Neighbors were cancelled, but the Tuesday comedy hour is quite risky and doesn’t seem to have that much upside. Yet ABC can’t really do much about it, since their only comedy in reserve is freshman family comedy Fresh Off the Boat. They might end up stuck carrying at least one underperforming comedy due to their decision to clean house.
Most Likely New Hit: Forever seems right in ABC’s wheelhouse and has a solid lead-in in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, so I’d be pretty surprised if it was rejected.
Likely First Cancellation: Manhattan Love Story. It has a less known cast than Selfie and ABC already pledged their loyalty to Emily Kapnek with three seasons of Suburgatory, so if it comes down to which Tuesday comedy to eliminate, Manhattan Love Story is at a distinct disadvantage.
What I’ll Be Watching:
Fall: Revenge, Manhattan Love Story, The Goldbergs, Black-ish
Midseason: American Crime, Galavant, The Whispers, Secrets and Lies, Fresh Off the Boat
CRAIG’S CHOICES:
Most Promising Trailer: Although it was creepy as all get out, The Whispers trailer at least lured me in. Not sure how I might like the show itself, though.
Most Anticipated New Show: Agent Carter. We don’t have a trailer for it – advertisers at the Upfronts were shown bits from the DVD extra feature that was already filmed and released – but I really like producers Fazekas and Butters, and I really like Hayley Atwell. They might find it’s much more on-brand than the Marvel show they actually have 22 episodes of. Oops.
Best Scheduling Move: I love that ABC moved The Goldbergs to Wednesday nights where it belongs. It’s a great show, and I hope that the move helps the show even more. If you’re not watching already… why don’t you make like a tree, and get out of here.
Worst Scheduling Move: I really don’t like that first hour of Tuesdays either, and do agree it’ll be a tough sell. I also agree that it’s a shame nothing from last year could’ve been saved as backup, but that could be my Trophy Wife love not wanting to let go.
Most Likely New Hit: Again, going with Agent Carter, even though it’s short-term. Marvel + good producers + likable lead character + fun period piece = win. Unless “period piece” and “spies” brings memories of The Assets or whatever it was called, in which case we’ll have some trouble.
Likely First Cancellation: Also agreeing: Manhattan Love Story. Simply because people might not seek it out, and they might not care.
What I’ll Be Watching:
Fall: Once Upon A Time, The Goldbergs, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Forever (maybe), Selfie (at least to start, because I love Karen Gillan), Resurrection
Midseason: The Whispers (maybe), Agent Carter
SO, HOW DID WE DO?
With a half point per half hour, and a half point deducted if the night but not the time were right, Shilo ended up with 15 points out of a possible 19 in predicting this year’s ABC schedule. Craig ended up with 14.5, losing a half point for noting the wrong show to jump in for Once Upon A Time at midseason.
Come back tomorrow as we see how we did with The CW schedule!
