SHILO’s SUPERLATIVES
Most Promising Trailer: I’m intrigued by Angel From Hell. It puts me in mind of Wilfred, one of the most underrated comedies of the decade, and I’m curious how a premise like this can handle being on broadcast. It’s very different for CBS, so I’m not expecting it to do well, but I’d like to see where it goes in the time that it does get.
Most Anticipated New Show: Probably Life in Pieces, just because I wonder how the showrunner can balance the tremendously talented cast that has been assembled. Oftentimes, a deep cast like this ends up being a hindrance, in that writers try to write for the talent vs. writing for the story, so I’m curious about who gets the most screen time and whether things become messy trying to service everyone.
Best Scheduling Move: I like that CBS is having Life in Pieces stick with The Big Bang Theory vs. leaving it with a weaker lead-in. If a single camera comedy is going to work on this network, it’s going to have to be nurtured and given that the last few multi-cams behind Big Bang haven’t exactly set the world on fire, it makes sense to try a single cam for once.
Worst Scheduling Move: Pulling 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly seems like it’ll come back to bite CBS. I get that they now have a stable midseason hour that they don’t have to worry about, but there are other hours on their schedule that could’ve been pushed to midseason in order to allow them to air in the fall. Disappointingly, this feels like CBS is starting to play the studio politics that have consumed broadcast recently, as both 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly are produced by an outside studio.
Most Likely New Hit: Supergirl should get some great sampling, considering the massive online attention it’s received since the premiere of its trailer. I don’t know if it can hold a CBS audience, or if it’ll be able to get outside audiences watching other CBS shows, but it has the makings of one of fall’s biggest breakouts.
Likely First Cancellation: It should be a race between Code Black and Angel From Hell. Code Black will premiere earlier, giving it longer to fall apart, but Angel From Hell has erratic scheduling, an unfamiliar format for CBS viewers, and airs in a tougher time slot, so it might beat Code Black to the television morgue, especially since there are three comedies in reserve.
What I’ll Be Watching in the Fall: I’ll check out Life in Pieces for the cast and Angel From Hell for the premise.
CRAIG’s CHOICES
Most Promising Trailer: Supergirl. I know I have a pro-Kryptonian bias, but I must have watched that trailer over a dozen times the day it dropped.
Most Anticipated New Show: Since I shouldn’t say Supergirl to everything, I’m going with Limitless. I found the series premiere interesting and I would like to see more.
Best Scheduling Move: Putting Supergirl on Mondays at 8 could possibly be the most daring and ballsy move of the 2015 Upfronts season… and it could pay off for CBS, much like the whole “Scorpion at 9PM on Mondays” thing did for them last year.
Worst Scheduling Move: I don’t think Life In Pieces nor Angel From Hell will fit in with their lead-ins very well. Also, as I mentioned earlier, Limitless really should be on a different night.
Most Likely New Hit: Limitless. Supergirl will do well but Limitless follows two powerful NCIS shows.
Likely First Cancellation: Life In Pieces. Let’s see if that one lasts long enough to make the move to Thursday.
What I’ll Be Watching In The Fall: Supergirl, Limitless, The Big Bang Theory sometimes
SO, HOW DID WE DO?
For one point per correct hour, subtracting a half-point for the right night but same timeslot, Craig had 13.75 points out of a possible 22, and Shilo came out with 13. Next up: The CW!
