Advance Review: The Vampire Diaries “The Last Day”

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, we were fortunate enough to attend a press screening of tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, which airs at 8PM on The CW.

So what’s the verdict? Well, beware of possible spoilers…

“The Last Day” title is about what you might do in your final moments of life. (Whose? Watch the show and find out….) For a show like The Vampire Diaries, especially with Klaus now on the scene, almost every character on the show could have a Grim Reaper ready to attack at any moment — especially as it seems there are very few characters left who are not aware that there are vampires in Mystic Falls.

There are also werewolves in Mystic Falls, and Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Jules pick what might be the absolute worst time to come back to town. Tyler seems to be learning how to control himself a bit better, and seems to be in a more mature, less rage-filled place than we last saw him.

The Matt-and-Sheriff-Forbes-pretending-they-don’t-know-Caroline-is-a-vampire storyline continues, and although I’ve said this before, it’s great to see Matt around a character where it seems he actually belongs and is accepted almost like family. Both Matt and Caroline’s mom love and care for Caroline even though she has gone through the changes she’s gone through.

The other advantage of “The Last Day” is that, as if it wasn’t made clear already, Elena is the polar opposite of Twilight’s Bella Swan. Whereas Bella seems kind of dim in her unabated devotion to Edward, Elena has always and still does have her own personality that doesn’t always have to revolve around Stefan. There’s a beautiful scene between the two of them this week.

If you’re a die-hard TVD fan you’ve probably read by now that Damon makes a tough decision that might haunt him as we go into the season’s final episodes. The difference in approach between Damon and Stefan is yet another thing that makes this show worth watching.

Speaking of brothers, Klaus and Elijah are both in this episode too, now in the present day. Klaus seems to be the man with the plan, and Elijah… I’m still not sure what his game is.

Finally, this episode brings forth some alliances and moments that we thought we’d never see. Alaric and Damon working together? And wait until you see who… wait, I think I’ve said enough.

Oh wait. No I haven’t said enough. One MORE thing: There’s more than one “I-did-not-see-that-coming” moment tonight. That’s probably to be expected from TVD, but just be warned. What you think will happen, is probably not what is going to happen. I credit the Vampire Diaries writing team with keeping it real and having the ability to surprise us constantly.

“The Last Day” airs tonight at 8PM (ET) on The CW.

Please do not reproduce this review on other websites… short clips, however, are fine. Please feel free to join us in discussion of tonight’s episode on our dedicated Vampire Diaries sub-forum! You can find a gallery of images from tonight’s episode here.
