Once Upon A Time: Why Those Three? Would Someone Recognize Cruella?

After tonight’s Once Upon A Time was screened to a group of members of the press, some of us all had the same questiins: Why those three villains? And wouldn’t people recognize Cruella de Vil from 100 Dalmatians as Mrs. Feinberg?

The show’s creators set us straight.

“Maleficent was previously on the show, and we always wanted to get back to her, which is why we never fully killed her,” OUAT Executive Producer Edward Kitsis explains. “Ursula, we kind of set up a little bit and teased in the Ariel episode, and we think she’s a lot of fun, and then Cruella… we just liked her. I mean, really. There’s a sass to her. What we wanted was for Gold to take a lesson of the heroes who always worked together, and realized he needed to work together with villains. We just love the idea of the team of evil. Our wish list of who we wanted to write was kind of these three,” he continues.

MERRIN DUNGEY, ROBERT CARLYLE, KRISTIN BAUER, VICTORIA SMURFIT“If you keep watching, you’ll see there’s a connection between all of them,” Adam Horowitz adds. “That will make it more clear why it’s those three in particular.”

And with Cruella de Vil, if 101 Dalmatians exists in the “real world,” won’t people recognize her?

“Like a lot of the stories in the show, they do exist in our world,” Horowitz says.

“This is the real story,” Kitsis interrupts. “So, as Hook found out – that they made a movie about him, and that he was played by a guy with a perm, that was shocking to him, but we’ve met the real Hook and he has short hair and guy liner. So, we are aware of Cruella.”

“If your question is ‘why didn’t Mr. Feinberg recognize her,’ maybe he thought it was an ironic name she had taken,” Horowitz laughs.
