ABC has officially cancelled crime soap Notorious after one 10-episode season. The series, plagued by poor marketing and the high expectations that come with airing on ABC Thursdays, came in particularly low when it premiered in September 2016 and never found any kind of ratings footing. It eventually saw its 13-episode first season reduced to 10 episodes in October, which was essentially an informal cancellation, and quietly aired its series finale away from its Grey’s Anatomy lead-in in December.
From Josh Berman (Drop Dead Diva) and newcomer Allie Hagan, Notorious was based on the relationship between infamous defense attorney Mark Gerragos and Larry King Live news producer Wendy Walker. The series followed vaunted executive producer Julia George (Piper Perabo) as she manipulated the on-camera antics of the cable news show she produced in order to score boffo ratings. Part of that manipulation came in the form of her complicated relationship with defense attorney Jake Gregorian (Daniel Sunjata), who gets involved in a criminal matter himself that has reverberations throughout Los Angeles.
In addition to Perabo and Sunjata, Notorious starred Aimee Teegarden (Star-Crossed), J. August Richards (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce), Kevin Zegers (Dawn of the Dead), Ryan Guzman (Heroes), Kate Jennings Grant (Frost/Nixon), and Sepideh Moafi (The Deuce).
The series finale of Notorious aired Thursday, December 8th at 10:00 on ABC.
