Last week as part of the Television Critics Association Press Tour, Warner Bros. Television hosted a special WB❤️COMEDY studio day where press was able to visit the sets of several of their popular sitcom series. One such show was Night Court, where we were able to talk to one of our favorites from the updated series — Lacretta, who plays Donna “Gurgs” Gurganous on the show.
Being an update to a classic TV series, an easy question to ask someone involved with a new version is how much of the classic show they have seen — after all, Night Court had almost a decade of episodes starting in 1984.
“I was very familiar with the original series,” Lacretta sayswhen asked about her experience. “I was watching it in syndication, by the time I got to it.” That also inspires the next question: Did she have a favorite character on the show?
“Do I have a favorite? Gosh. Not one single favorite person, but I often liked seeing Dan and Roz interact with each other, because they’re so different, but yet the same. Both very strong, grounded energies. The one most recent [episode] that I remember was her blood sugar dropped, and she was hallucinating and was on the roof walking on the edge, and Dan had a moment where he talked her down. It was really good,” she says.
Considering her enjoyment of the Dan and Roz characters, was it surreal to see John Larroquette and Marsha Warfield acting right in front of her when Roz returned for this year’s Night Court season premiere?
“Absolutely,” Lacretta admits. “I get a little bit of anxiety, so I tend to hide, but when I’m hiding, it’s like the best view to get to watch and take those things in. I did get to sit down and talk with [Marsha Warfield] and she had some beautiful things to say, and she’s continuing to say beautiful things about being back here and how she feels about me in further articles, so I’m appreciative for that. No one has to say anything; they can just talk about themselves, but she chose to share.”
New episodes of Night Court air Tuesday nights on NBC.
