The CW has made their new series decisions for the 2021-2022 TV season. These new shows include the DC Comics-based Naomi from Ava DuVernay and the All American spinoff All American: Homecoming. Missing from the list of pickups, sadly, is Painkiller, the Black Lightning spinoff that was to star Jordan Calloway; the high-profile Powerpuff is going to be redeveloped, apparently with the same cast and producers. The network’s update of The 4400, titled simply 4400, had already been ordered to series.
The CW has also passed on Jennie Snyder Urman’s Our Ladies of Brooklyn and the Tom Swift spinoff from Nancy Drew is still a possibility. THR has noted that both Our Ladies of Brooklyn and Painkiller will be shopped to other outlets.
The CW will be announcing their Fall and Midseason schedules for 2021-2022 tomorrow.
All American: Homecoming, which is written and executive produced by Nkechi Okoro Carrolli, is a young adult sports drama set against the backdrop of the HBCU experience. It follows a young tennis hopeful from Beverly Hills and an elite baseball player from Chicago as they contend with the high stakes of college sports, while also navigating the highs, lows and sexiness of unsupervised early adulthood at a prestigious historically Black college. Geffri Maya reprises her All American role as Simone Hicks in this series, which has a backdoor pilot airing this season on the parent series; Peyton Alex Smith, Kelly Jenrette, Cory Hardrict, Sylvester Powell, Netta Walker and Camille Hyde also star.
Based on the comic book series by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell for DC Comics, Naomi follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the Multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.
Kaci Walfall stars as Naomi; also starring in the series are Cranston Johnson, Alexander Wraith, Mary-Charles Jones, Barry Watson, Mouzam Makkar, Daniel Puig, Camila Moreno, Will Meyers and Aidan Gemme.
